- We are proud of being at the heart of where the railway began.
We are proud of being at the heart of where railways began. We still operate trains over parts of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, which opened in 1825, and along nearly all of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway which opened in 1830. Many of the lines over which we operate were built by the Stephensons.
We are unique amongst railway businesses in having our own staff history group, which meets periodically for talks and slide shows on aspects of Northern rail history.
We have published a well-illustrated guide to the history of railways in the North - 'Northern Heritage' - and it is available from ACORP, Rail and River Centre, Civic Hall, New Street, Slaithwaite, Huddersfield HD7 5AB. It costs £3.50 including postage and £1 from every copy sold goes to The Railway Children Charity.
