Northern named Best Transport Operator

18th October 2007

Northern Rail has scooped the title of Best Transport Operator at the Merseyside Transport Awards, held at Merseytravel’s inaugural Annual Transport Conference.

The judges praised Northern Rail for its outstanding contribution to achieving a more sustainable transport future. They went on to commend the UK’s largest train operator for improving the performance of services on Merseyside’s City Line, which has helped attract 10 per cent more passengers in 2006/07, and for introducing newer trains to provide an extra 250,000 seats a year.

Heidi Mottram, Managing Director, Northern Rail said: “We’re proud to be serving the people of Merseyside and this award is fantastic recognition of the hard work of everyone at Northern and our partners.”

“We’re committed to realising the true potential of local rail as the most sustainable means of connecting people to opportunities and we’re delighted to have been acknowledged for this.”

Neil Scales, Chair of the Local Transport Plan Partnership and Chief Executive of Merseytravel, said: “These awards were an opportunity to reward some of the great work being carried out across Merseyside to help us all to reach our goal of creating a more sustainable transport network.

“Congratulations to all of the winners and thank you to everyone who entered and helped to make the event such a big success.”

The honour comes a few weeks after Northern was named Public Transport Operator of the Year at the National Transport Awards.
