SUCCESS FOR NORTHERN AT NATIONAL RAIL AWARDS
8th September 2006
Train operator Northern picked-up a handful of accolades at the National Rail Awards, which celebrate excellence and achievement in the UK rail industry, in a ceremony held last night (Thursday, 7 September 2006) at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.
Northern won the coveted Sir Robert Horton Safety Award for its innovative NorthernTrax initiative aimed at encouraging young people to stay off railway tracks and make and play music instead. In its citation the judging panel commented: “This is a wonderfully fresh approach to getting the trespass message across using their interest in listening to and making music. The campaign has made a big contribution to the 25 per cent reduction in route crime and trespass, and the concept is capable of further development and wider application.”
Network Strategy Manager for Northern, John Naisby, claimed the Outstanding Personal Contribution award. Praising John’s contribution the judges said: “John’s inspired delivery lets everyone know just where they stand with him, and his enthusiasm and commitment left the National Rail Award judges in no doubt that he should be a 2006 winner.”
Two stations operated by Northern also won praise from the judges. Meadowhall was highly commended in the medium station of the year category while Burscough Bridge was highly commended in the small station of the year category.
Northern’s Managing Director, Heidi Mottram, said: “To win these awards is a great achievement: the judging process is tough and the competition is strong. We’re delighted to receive these accolades for Northern.”
