CELEBRATING CONGLETON'S NEW HOURLY RAIL SERVICE

16th February 2009

CELEBRATING CONGLETON'S NEW HOURLY RAIL SERVICE asset 1

Guests recently gathered at Congleton Station to celebrate its new hourly service to Manchester and Stoke-on Trent. The new service was introduced by Northern Rail in December and is proving popular with passengers using the station.

To mark the occasion Ann Winterton MP waved off the 11.12 Congleton – Manchester Piccadilly service.

Councillor Denis Murphy, Mayor of Congleton and Councillor Douglas Parker, Congleton’s Town Crier were also on hand to lend their support. To highlight the great value for money offers available to passengers on the route Northern Rail presented Lady Ann Winterton MP and the Councillors with a DUO ticket. The DUO gives passengers one return ticket, plus a second return for half price when two adults travel together off peak.

Lee Wasnidge, Area Director, Northern Rail said: “I’d like to thank our local partners for their support in introducing Congleton’s new hourly service, we’re delighted that passengers are making use of the improved travel opportunities and the great value for money fares on offer. ”

Ann Winterton MP, said: “I am delighted that Congleton station has finally got a new hourly service, which will no doubt prove popular with commuters and leisure travellers alike. Such as service is long over due!”

Mark Thomas, East Cheshire Lines Rail User Group said: “The re-introduction of the Monday to Saturday hourly service at Congleton was one of the first objectives proposed by the membership of the East Cheshire Lines Rail Users Group when it was formed some 10 years ago. Throughout that period we have seen more and more passengers using the station and the introduction of the hourly service by Northern, our local operator now provides more stability and confidence over the longer term future of rail services at Congleton than we have had for many years. As well as exploiting our new service we hope that passengers will join us in lobbying for improved car parking and bus interchange as the next development in our towns rail infrastructure.”

Buying a DUO ticket means two adults can travel from Congleton to Manchester and return for as little as £11.10 or to Stoke-on Trent for a mere £7.30.
