NORTHERN RAIL TEAM SWAPS TRAIN WHEELS FOR TWO WHEELS

4th June 2010

A team of Northern employees swapped train wheels for two wheels when they took part in a 150-mile cycling challenge from Blackpool to Newcastle to raise money for two hospices.

The team of five, including keen cyclist and Area Director Matthew Beeton, all work in Northern’s Area North, which covers the North East, Lancashire and Cumbria.

They raised money for St Oswald’s Hospice in Newcastle and Trinity Hospice in Blackpool.  Both hospices provide palliative care for children and adults.

The challenge began at Blackpool North station on Thursday 27 May, where youngsters who are being supported by Trinity Hospice waved off the team.  Their journey took them up the Fylde Coast, into the Lake District and along the TransPennine trial, finishing at Newcastle Central Station on Saturday 29 May.

Matthew Beeton, Area Director, Northern Rail said: “Operating train services right across the north of England we serve a lot of communities and are always looking for the opportunity to help and support them.

“The team felt very strongly about raising money for local hospices, which provide so much care and support for the terminally ill and their families.”
