THOUSANDS OF EXTRA SEATS FOR TALL SHIPS RACES

3rd August 2010

Northern will provide thousands of extra seats for people travelling to Hartlepool for the Tall Ships Races, running additional train services and adding more carriages to existing services, on each day of the event (Saturday 7 August – Tuesday 10 August).

The additional services will run between Darlington - Hartlepool - Sunderland providing a direct connection with the East Coast Main Line.

Matt Beeton, Area Director, Northern, said:  “With up to one million visitors expected at the event, the roads will be extremely busy.

“The train offers a practical, value for money alternative to taking the car, meaning visitors can leave their cars at home and travel to the event without worrying about traffic jams and parking.”

Those who go by train will arrive at the newly refurbished Hartlepool station after Network Rail completed a £1.2m makeover to replace the Victorian canopies and renovate a redundant platform.

The work was undertaken as part of a project to create a transport interchange, connecting trains, buses and taxis in time for The Tall Ships Races.

Richard Lungmuss, Route Director, Network Rail said:  “The improvements we have already made to the station building mean that Hartlepool now has facilities of which to be proud.  This creates a great first impression of the town to the hundreds-of-thousands of visitors travelling to the Tall Ships event. The timetable for these works was tight and it is a testament to all of the parties involved that we have a station and rail service this prestigious event merits.”
