So you are interested in being a Train Conductor?

You will be the first point of contact for customers on board our trains therefore you’ll be the face of Northern to our customers. We expect you to be customer focused in everything you do and to provide the customer with a fantastic experience when they are travelling with us.

The Conductor also has safety critical responsibilities to undertake. We will give you full training in all aspects of the job to ensure you know your responsibilities and what you are expected to do.

Unfortunately from time to time every day does not run smoothly. If there is a delay to your train and there is something you can do about it, we will expect that with the help of your colleagues you approach the problem in a structured, logical way.

Because we provide a transport service to the public, it’s not a 9-5 job. We need you to be able to deal with the varying shift patterns which can start at any time of day/night plus also work weekends too. The working week averages 35 hours, but some weeks you will work more and some weeks you will work less than 35 hours.

As this is such a key role, there is an extensive, intensive 3 month training programme. The training is a mixture of classroom and location based. Due to the nature of the role you must be medically fit too.

How to apply

Due to the safety critical nature of the Train Conductor role there is a requirement that you must live within a 30 minute distance away from your working station, please note you must live within this distance area at the time you apply for the role.
