For Northern, environmental sustainability is about making a proactive and positive contribution to the environment. It is all part of our approach to social responsibility. We are looking at where we can make even more impact and developing action plans that will help us achieve our goal of being a low carbon business.
We want as many people as possible to get involved and help us to deliver our vision which is realising the true potential of local rail as the most sustainable means of connecting people to opportunities, and to ensure we become the train operating company making the most positive contribution to environmental sustainability.
We take our commitment to social responsibility seriously. Northern wants to lead by example and help all our industry partners tackle the issues surrounding sustainable development.
We work with many partners, including customers, employees, shareholders, stakeholders, suppliers and local communities. All these people are important in helping us to improve our performance and we hope we can put something back too.
We use a lot of electricity, gas and fuel as well as buying goods from many sectors. If we want to be a low carbon business, we need to reduce our consumption of energy and procure in a more sustainable way if we are to make a positive impact on the changing climate.
We want to reduce our consumption of natural resources and reduce waste. We want to make sure the waste we do produce is reused or recycled as much as possible.
We want to reduce the amount of pollution we produce and manage our risks.
