Centurion named Northern Rail Cup Player of the Week

4th March 2009

Centurion named Northern Rail Cup Player of the Week asset 1 Leigh Centurions’ star Chris Hill has collected the Northern Rail Cup Player of the Week award after playing a central role in guiding his team into the Quarter Finals of the competition.

The Centurions confirmed their place in the hat for the Northern Rail Cup Quarter Final draw after beating Whitehaven 24-22 in front of a bumper crowd of 1,789 at Leigh Sporting Village Stadium on Sunday.

Chris Hill said: "It was a great match against Whitehaven, they came down and played really well and I think we picked their pocket in the last minute, but if we can get a result even when we’re not playing our best we have a good chance this year.

"I’m very pleased to have won the award, I just got on with my job and it was an excellent team performance which sealed the win for us- the most important thing is that we’re through to the Quarter Finals.

"From the start of the season we thought that we could make the semi finals at least and we want to make the Northern Rail Cup Final which would be a great day out for our supporters."

Two rescheduled Northern Rail Cup group stage matches take place tonight (Wednesday 4 March) with Barrow Raiders hosting Widnes Vikings at 7.30pm and Blackpool travelling to The Shay to take on Halifax in a match which kicks off at 8:00pm.

The top four teams from Pool A and Pool B will be entered into the Northern Rail Cup Quarter Finals draw which will take place at the Sky Sports televised Halifax v Widnes Co-operative Championship fixture on Thursday 19 March.

The Northern Rail Cup Final will take place at Bloomfield Road, Blackpool on Sunday July 12.
