Two Leading Legends: One Great Event

14th December 2009

The beautiful and elegant new glass trophy will be presented to the inaugural winners of the eagerly anticipated Legends of Rugby event on Thursday December 17 next at the EIS Sheffield  by 2 of world rugby's finest.

Dual code international Ray French who served England with distinction in both League and Union and the man voted in 2007 the best Great Britain Rugby League player of all time Ellery Hanley MBE will have the honour of leading the ceremonial deputation on the night.

Hanley had a glittering career on both sides of the globe with Wigan, Bradford, Leeds and Balmain.

Highly decorated Ellery also captained Great Britain in many memorable displays and was awarded the MBE in 1990 by the Queen for his services to the 13 aside code. Ellery also assisted Clive Woodward’s England team prior to their World Cup triumph in 2003.

French has continued to serve the sport he loves since his playing career with St Helens and Widnes ended and has become the voice of Rugby League with his excellent and well received commentaries for the BBC.

Event Director Lionel Hurst explains the selection: " With so many well known names appearing in the teams on the night it was only right and proper to seek to emulate this quality with august guests as principal dignitaries.

“Ray has done so much for rugby in so many ways and the incomparable Ellery was one of the finest athletes of his generation."

The event will be given top billing by Sky Sports on the weekend of January 2 and January 3  2010. The two-hour special will be screened at 7pm and 11pm on Saturday and 6.30am and 2pm on Sunday. Rising star and host of Sky Sports News, Natalie Sawyer will present the show.

Past and present stars of both codes will take part in a unique indoor tournament in the Athletics Arena at the EIS. Played under International touch rules, 4 teams: England, Wales, New Zealand All Golds and the Buccaneers will play each other to find the Legends of Rugby Champions 2009.
