Aaron Dobek Player of the Round

29th March 2010

Aaron Dobek Player of the Round asset 1 Featherstone’s Aaron Dobek collected a coveted Northern Rail Cup Player of the Round for Round award after scoring 24 points in Rovers’ 68-0 victory over Hunslet Hawks in the re-arranged round one tie.

The 22-year old was in fine form scoring 10 goals and rounding off an impressive performance with a superb team try which helped him clinch his award for a round which took five weeks to complete because of snow and frozen pitches.

Featherstone Rovers Head Coach Daryl Powell said: “Aaron is a player developing all the time and his all round control and kicking was quality. He has shown his versatility playing at seven and at nine and showed a level of maturity in the game.

“The performance against Hunslet shows that even with injuries, we have the players that can step up and perform at first team level. The backlog of fixtures has seen us play four games in 12 days and to nil them was a big achievement. The changes we made for the game shows the depth we’ve got at the club and this improvement means that there is now sustained pressure being placed on the players already in the team.”

The Featherstone playmaker proved the difference between the two sides in last week’s game at the South Leeds Stadium. Dobek ended the first half with a 100 per cent record with the boot and surged through the Hunslet defence to set-up Zak Hardaker who touched down between the posts.

Despite losing Gareth Williamson to the sin-bin shortly before half-time, Featherstone immediately added to their 18 first half points with the inspirational Dobek finishing off a superb team try.

After Jack Lee broke free through the middle, Dobek was on hand to touch down in the corner after Tommy Saxton was tackled just short of the line. Despite missing the subsequent kick the scrum-half finished the game with impressive stats of 10 goals from 12 attempts, which included a number of successes from the touchline.

Dobek pictured with Northern area manager, Pat Cox said: “I’m delighted to win this award. I hadn’t prepared, but my kicking just came good in the game against Hunslet.”
