Shock win puts Batley in final
17th June 2010
Batley gained a shock 25-4 victory over former winners Leigh in Thursday night's first semi-final of the Northern Rail Cup at Leigh Sports Village to reach their first major final for 58 years.
Centre Danny Maun scored two tries as Karl Harrison's men booked a trip to Blackpool's Bloomfield Road on July 18 for their biggest match since 1952, when they lost to Huddersfield in the Yorkshire Cup final at Headingley.
The result was a body blow to the Centurions, who needed to win the trophy in order to apply for a Super League licence next year.
Ian Millward's men dominated the first half and led through winger Steve Maden's 13th-minute try.
But Batley defended heroically and struck back after 28 minutes when Maun finished off a break from scrum-half Gareth Moore, who added a conversion to an earlier penalty to make it 8-4 at the break.
Leigh full-back Stuart Donlan twice came to his side's rescue with last-gasp tackles that prevented Batley winger Lee Greenwood from grounding the ball over the line but he could do little stop prop Sean Hesketh crashing over for the Bulldogs' second try after 52 minutes.
Johnny Campbell set up the position for the try with a 70-yard break and pulled off a trysaver with a wonderful tackle on Dave Alstead before Moore edged the visitors further in front with a drop goal.
The Bulldogs, who made sure of the win thanks to late tries from Maun and hooker Kris Lythe, will now await the winners of Sunday's second semi-final between Keighley and Widnes at Cougar Park.
