Carlisle - The Great Border City
At Carlisle Castle you can explore chambers, stairways and dungeons and see the 'licking stones' which gave prisoners lifesaving moisture. The Citadel, once a prison, is an interesting place to spend time.
Whitehaven - an 'England Gem Town'
The picturesque harbour dates back to 1633 and Whitehaven's mining began in the 13th Century. Get the full story at the Beacon and Haig Colliery Mining Museum, and uncover the 'Dark Spirit of Whitehaven' in the Rum Story.
Ravenglass
Ravenglass, the Lake District National Park's only coastal town, was an important Roman naval base. The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, affectionately know as 'La'l Ratty', is also central to the town's history. Opened in 1875 to bring ore to Ravenglass, it now takes visitors on a steam-hauled journey from the station to Dalegarth, calling at Muncaster Mill, Irton Road, The Green and Beckfoot. At Ravenglass Station you can pick up an illustrated Wainwright guide of ten 'Walks from Ratty'.
Barrow-in-Furness
The spectacular Dock Museum tells how a small hamlet became the world leader in iron and steel and a major shipbuilding centre.
