In 2010 and 2011 Northern Rail has spent nearly £1million upgrading cycling facilities at stations on routes that feed into Leeds station.

Over 100 stations have now benefitted from improved cycle parking facilities, most of which are protected from the rain, and covered by CCTV and lighting to improve their security.

This was to complement the CyclePoint at Leeds which forms the hub of this network at Leeds and was opened in September 2010. It is based on a concept that is well established in the Netherlands - manned and secure cycle storage, rental and sales of accessories - clothing, maps, lights etc.

The aim of the wider project is to provide a comprehensive network of cycling facilities for passengers at either end of their rail journey, encouraging more people to choose to travel sustainably by train whilst starting and finishing their journey by bicycle.

To celebrate the improved cycling infrastructure provided and to encourage people to start making more journeys to and from the station by bike Northern Rail have organised a series of summer cycling activities.

Bike 'n' Ride - Summer Cycling Series

A selection of free cycling events were held at several stations this summer - people could get their bike fixed for free, enjoy an leisurely evening cycle ride with a French picnic, and find out how to get fit by introducing cycling into their daily routines, or enter a commuter challenge and be rewarded for their hard work. Every participant got a FREE water bottle and a pack full of local cycling information.

Experts were on hand to chat about anything that people wanted to know about cycling to/from the station.
